his house at night in his absence, beat his daughter and took a gun belonging to Calloway; Calloway on learning the outrage made complaint to me and as the Grand Jury was about to be convened at Floyd B.H. I directed Calloway to meet me there and I would have the matter placed before the Grand Jury;  On Calloways return home Young Huff found out that Calloway had made complaint to me, and went with a number of men at night to Calloways house and beat him in a most brutal manner, injuring him so that he was unable to appear before the Grand Jury.
There were other witnesses and I had the matter laid before the Grand Jury and indictments were found against such of the party as could be identified; I do not know what arrests have been made but expect information in a few days. In a case of this kind I think I would be of decided advantage if the Military Authorities could take action as the trial will not take place for five or six months and the parties will probably be allowed to go at large on small bail;  It is in my opinion absolutely necessary that speedy justice should be meted out to these ruffians to prevent further outrages of the kind.
