The Freedmen throughout my Sub Dist. are nearly all at work. They seems to be more generally at work than they were last year, and will make good crops for the reason that they have secured to themselves, better land and teams that in any previous year.

The greatest draw-back they have, is the frequency they visit the little stores—perfect class-traps— now in great number all over the country, at intervals of about 6 to 10 miles. These little stores gull them out of everything they are able to earn. Especially in the Oyster and fishing regions.

There many be some negroes run short of provisions ere the coming crop arrives at maturity. This year it is thought, will teach all such as fall short economy, which they stand so much in need of.

They are now strugling to erect School Houses and churches. They have the most intense desire for education. Not a
