Sabboth passes but you may find them congregated together worshipping.- Some in places in the woods, in old huts, and at the back end of the White's Churches. They have erected one log church, which is to answer as a school House also. This house cannot hold however one-fourth of those who go to it. There are now and then some colored men who preach. But the general run of their religious services is conducted in the old way. They want Books-sabbath=school books, and Day School teachers from the north. They ask me frequently to procure them for them, They are mistrustful of the Whites here as teachers. There is a very strong effort on foot by they White churches to get this African Church under their control. This is obviously, as negroes say themselves, for the purpose of securing them educationally Religiously and politically. I have not talked with a white minister here- and I have talked with many- but all such were very streniously opposed to northern Benevolent Institutions who are working in this colored field south.
