working such land for half thew crop, while others pay a small annual rent.  Many again, own the land upon which they are working, and have erected small houses.

They display great energy and perseverance, seeming to feel a pride in their success, and very great ambition to own their little farms both men and women working on the crops.

I think the feeling between the white and colored people is somewhat less bitter then heretofore, as there seems to be a desire on the part of many of the citizens to assist the Freedmen; allowing them land at low rents and giving employment. Still there are many who yet take every opportunity of oppressing and wronging the colored people, and I consider the presence of the Bureau officer absolutely essential to their prosperity
