of the Freedmen addressed the meeting and good order and kind feeling animated the whole assembly with the exception of one drunken student who was led away by his friends. Even he was only disorderly in being noisy. To this meeting I largely attribute the kinder sentiments that now exist among the colored people.

There is but little sickness in the division, and the crops promise an abundant harvest, so that I do not fear any destitution during the present year.

The overseers of the poor show no partiality towards either white or colored in extending to both the benevolence of the county.

The Freedmen are generally busy at work, and I have heard a number of white persons declare that they never behaved better - even when they were slaves - than they do now - a very significant acknowledgement.

Enclosed you will find the report of the Randolph Street Freedmens School under the auspices of the Free Baptist Church. Also the report of a week school at Brownsburg and a Sunday school near the Natural Bridge. All these schools are in Rockbridge County, and by the Reports you will see that they are in a flourishing condition.

Very respectfully
