They were composed mostly of a Map called "Poor whites". They were persecuted & threatened and obliged to flee to the mountains or to the north, to save their lives, Since the war they are treated with the utmost contempt not being regarded with as much respect as the negro, by even those who now make the loudest professions of Loyalty, they are called by way of, contempt "Red strings" Every effort is made to prevent the Blacks from uniting with them, by circulating reports prejudicial to them, and their characters as men of honesty and integrity and exciting the prejudice of the colored men against them. They both want such land as will give equal rights, to all. They both want free schools, and an Equitable system of Taxation They want the way clear to improvement, wealth & prosperity.
