At Pearisburg Giles County the Freed-people are very anxious to have a School, and repeatedly ask me when their turn will come. A House and lot can be purchased at this place on reasonable terms, but needs considerable repairs. In several other localities, the Freedmen are building Log school Houses, with the hope when completed, they will be occupied for school purposes.

The census returns for Montgomery County are still unfinished, having been prevented through the multiplied duties of this office, to press it to completion.

In conclusion, I would respectfully present for consideration the importance and necessity for monthly visits or tours of inspection over the counties comprising this Division. It is indeed impossible to furnish all the information required by existing orders and circulars, unless the opportunity is afforded, of travelling over each county separately, and inquiring into the wants and condition of the people. If a Horse could be furnished, or the necessary transportation allowed, or actual travelling expenses paid, in order to visit the county seats of each of the counties, and intermediate points, once a month, or at least once in two months, it would prove of great advantage, and give us a better acquaintance with the wants and condition of the Freedpeople.
