would have been pronounced the language of an incendiary. I would have been accused of trying to creat dissentions, of being an enemy of good order & of the peace & dignity of the Commonwealth. These political aspirants circulate their pointed platform. The Colored people have brot them to me to read. On begging them to take the paper to some one else & not trouble me with such triffles, the reply invariably has been that they had no confidence in the Citizens. I have had several applicants for my influence with the Freedmen, some saying they would not enter the field without it. It is necessary for me to say perhaps that the character & tone of the language is about the same in all of the speakers to try to unite the colored voters against the party in power.
I have taken every means in my power to notify the Colored people of their rights & duties in regard to Registering.
