Registration duties have absorbed most of my time for the past month leaving but little time to transact Bureau business.

Silas Blackwell was murdered by James Bird (both freedmen) on the evening of Saturday, June 8th under the following circumstances:

Blackwell and Bird were working on the farm of Mr Howard near Accotink, when a quarrel ensued between them, with fatal result. The former was struck on the head with a hoe by the latter, fracturing his skull, from the effects of which he died soon after. Bird immediately fled. Every effort has been made to arrest him but thus far without success.

The freedmen's schools in this county closed on the 28th after a successful term.

I am, Captain,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obd't. Serv't.
Wm Shields
Lt. 44th U.S. Infantry
