The great want of the Freedmen, in this Dist, as elsewhere, is a home for himself, and his family, — a fair and just compensation for his labor, — schools for his children, — a correct education upon the legal and moral obligations of the married relation, and the true dignity of his manhood, — enlightenment upon, and establishment and protection in his civil and political rights, If under the fostering care of the government he can be secured these principal necessities of his elevation, all other, and minor sequences, will follow

I have heretofore called attention to the greate deficiency in the provision made for schools in this portion of the State, In a communication addressed to Rev. R. M. Manley I have called for an appropriation of five hundred dollars ($500) for a School House at Wytheville, in this county, and shall follow it up, by a request for four hundred dollars ($400) for Jeffersonville, in Tazewell county, and the same for Marion, Smythe County, in each of which, schools are greatly need, In each of the above named places a considerable sum can be raised in addition to what is asked from the Govt,
