State than formerly. I have heard of no cases of Cohabitation among them lately but have known of eighteen legalized Marriages during the past two months,

They are exhibiting considerable interest in their religious welfare as evinced in their present efforts to build a Church in Nottoway Co, and also in Lunenburg County,

Disposition of the Whites towards the Freedmen,

They treat the Freedmen with a slight degree more of respect and even kindness than they have done since 1865, This no doubt is owing to their changed political condition,

I hear but few complaints of beating and whipping of the Freedmen now, and no cases of driving off plantations which were so frequent last year

There is still some prejudice existing against the Freedmen, as exhibited almost every day by some one of the Citizens, this was particularly so during the Registration, when several Citizens endeavored to prevent their laborers from Registering by false reports of the object of such Registration, The Citizens express themselves as being confident of their ability to control the Colored Vote, I think the Freedmen have a correct appreciation of their new political rights & privileges.
