On account of the Teacher, Miss Lucy Eastman, not arriving here until the 1st of February, it has been decided, by the Board of Directors, of the New York Branch of the Freedmen Union Commission, to continue the School term for this place until the 1st day of August, when the School will be closed until 1st day of October - by which time we expect to have our new School House, ready for the fall session. During the past five months, the Scholars have made rapid advances in their studies: many of them who did not know their letters, can now read, write and cipher, and are well acquainted with the primary lessons in geography. The School House of Newbern, Pulaski County, will be ready for the organization of a large and flourishing School by the 1st of October, when it is expected they will be furnished with a Teacher from one of the benevolent associations of the north. This School interest promises to be a great success. The Sunday School at this place, numbers the same as at last report, both in Teachers and Scholars- and is doing a good work. At Neck Creek, Pulaski Co. a school numbering fifty six Scholars, has been inaugurated by an Old Colored Preacher, who is laboring for them free of charge. The only compensation he receives for his services, is boarding around from House to House among the Parents of the children - had this school an educated Teacher, it would become very prosperous, and in a great measure self sustaining. It is doing well under the circumstances. The Sunday School connected with this interest numbers five male and three Female (colored) Teachers - and has (beside most of the children of the day School) ten men and fourteen women "all colored" as Scholars. The Sunday School at Snowville, Pulaski Co. numbers Seven Male and three female (white) Teachers and thirty-six male and nineteen female Scholars (all colored.) This School commenced in April, but was unable to obtain positive information from it, until the present month. The Day School at McDonald's Mills, Montgomery Co. is in the same condition as at last reported -
over.
