The subject of temperance has been mentioned and brought to their notice but they do not approve of it; that is, they say they do not approve of getting drunk but that they do want an occasional drink; and while they freely endorse the temperance principle, they do not approve of total abstinence. This feeling is general among whites and blacks, their preachers themselves being unwilling to join any total abstinence society, although they (the preachers) will not discourage it among their congregations. I have spoken to most of their leading men but have not found any who are willing to take the lead in forming a Temperance Society.
