paying them promptly; their condition is sensibly improving in every way.

Drunkenness among the Freedmen is unknown in this county, still the Freedmen drink more or less. It cannot be expected that trained to take their dram in the field as a portion of their ration when slaves, they will in a day see the evil of it.

During the past winter a Temperance Society was organized in the county which has been supported with enthuziasm, and has gained converts, over a hundred have signed the pledge. Upon receipt of Circular Letter from War Department Bureau R.F. & A.L. dated May 15th 1867 leading men of the county were consulted; they report the interest in temperance unabated.
