done in other ways. A society among the children- "The Vanguard of Freedom" was started by Miss Jane Hosmer Principal of the school at this place, which promises well, in June. The most effectual work for temperance however, has been done in this Division by "The Union League." It embraces in Orange and Louisa Cos. over two-thousand members in the various councils- nearly all the adult male residents. I visited all the Lodges and have spoken in favor of temperance and resolutions have been passed and much interest created in favor of Temperance, which I think has and will sensibly diminish the evil of occasional dram drinking. Sabbath schools are on the increase all of which exert an influence to enlighten the minds of freemen upon the evils of drink.
