to me for Troops for the protection of the Union men and Freedmen, in, and around the town. There is no trouble caused by the Freedmen, they being peaceably disposed, and evince a desire to do only what is right.

The Freedmen in this Division are not inclined to intemperance in the use of intoxicating drinks or liquors, though they have no Temperance organizations among them. I have used endeavors to induce them to organize a Temperance Society in each County of this Division, but as yet it has not been accomplished, nor is it probable that it will be accomplished until after the elections are over, as they are organized into Societies for that purpose.
