Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
HEADQUARTERS SUB ASST. COM'R, 10th SUB DIST., STATE OF VIRGINIA.
Alexandria, Va., July 31st 1867
142.
Capt. Garrick Mallery
A.A.A. General
Bureau R.F. and A. Lands
Richmond, Va.
Captain;
In compliance with Circular No. 6 dated Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr. State of Va. Richmond, Va., Jany 29th 1867. I have the honor to report that the condition of Bureau affairs in Alexandria Co. Va. is as good as possibly can be expected, work is plenty, and there is no reason why there should be any destitution among those able to work, there are however, some cases of sickness, and of women with large families; to whom I am obliged to furnish subsistence.
The state of feeling between the whites and freedmen is impressing, and the freedmen are rapidly having conceded to them all the their rights.
I am Captain.
Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
S.P. Lee
Capt and Sub Asst. Comr
10th Sub. Dist. Va.

Transcription Notes:
3.16.2024 - On the next page of this project the letter is addressed to S.P. Lee. 3.16.2024 - In the Virginia Assistant Commissioners and Field Office Staff List, it lists as Sub Asst Comr for Alexandria Co, 10th Sub District - S.R. Lee but the middle initial in the signature does not resemble a "R" so I am transcribing per guidelines and transcribing what I see. Marking for review. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2024-03-16 13:41:57
