The Lincoln temperance society was formed in this town but has made slow progress in consequence of the events now transpiring. This society is greatly needed for not a small amount of money squandered at the liquor shops of Warrenton. I have been told by owners of these places that if it were not for the custom of the colored they would be obliged to close up. In my talks to the colored people at their meetings I have used all persuasion to break up this bad practice. At Manassas and other points in Prince William with the assistance of the Rev Mr York a Northern clergyman the cause of temperance is on the increase among the colored.

Upon the whole I am very much gratified with the progress that the freedmen have made in the past two months and also at the whites who are beginning to see matters in proper light.
