a residence in a poor house where a comfortable home and food are provided. This feeling with the whole tends to greater exertions to industry and frugality while in individual cases it might cause unnecessary suffering. One case of this kind has been reported. 

There is a want of clothing especially among the women and children. Inquiries into the circumstances of such applicants usually reveal the fact that they are members of large families with only one or two able to labor and whose means are exhausted in procuring their food, leaving nothing with which to purchase clothing. Clothing is supplied to the most destitute and needy of such stores as are on hand. 

Schools. Most of the schools are now in vacation. The Sabbath Schools are continued and are well attended with every prospect of doing much good. There are 17 Sabbath Schools in this District with an aggregate attendance of about 800 Scholars. 

There is a great demand for competent Teachers at least 18 should be sent into this District this coming fall. 

Appropriations have been made for building and repairing Schoolhouses at Bristol, Abingdon, Wytheville, Newbern, and Christiansburg, amounting in all to 1100 Dollars.
