every where cunning over their books, on every available opportunity during the day.

In the beginning of the month a donation of books from the Richmond Agebcy of the Amarican Tract Society was received for the Gogginsville Sunday School, in answer to my application of the 11th June; and during the month I had the honor to also make another application for a similar supply for the shcool at this place. Just now there seems to be considerable interest aroused, in various parts of the county in regard to establishing day schools; and I am endeavoring, as far as I can, to cooperate with the movers, and further the object. I find, however, that some of the would be Teachers, or conductors, have an eye more especially to their own aggrandizement, than to the real welfare of the colored people. 

Thus far I have not succeeded in securing any action towards organizing the Lincoln Temperance Society made mention of in Circular Letter of May 15th, from Bureau Hd. Qts., I have named the matter to those who are considered the leading men, and to many others amongst the colored people; but as yet, owing partly to this being the most busy season of the year with the farmers, none have responded to the call made. I am, nevertheless, sanguine of success in this particular. In the mean time I have to report most favorably in regard to the temperance of the freedmen in my Division. It could hardly be better
