which a freedmen has been discharged by his employer on account of his registering, in this Sub-Dist, the colored people have registered fully, they seem to know and appreciate what registration means, and if they can only be protected from their pretended friends until they can take care of themselves, there will be no difficulty in their maintaining their civil position.

There is but little distribution in this Sub-Dist. and that generally in cases of sickness or large families, causes that cannot be guarded against.

The freedmen mentioned in my report to you of July 3d 1867 have not yet been brought up for trial but their trial is expected to come up at August term, I shall attend it and see that justice is done them.

I have agitated considerably the movement in regard to temperance among the freedmen, all the colored clergymen have organizations started in their churches. (seven in all) the motion is gaining ground rapidly even in the scattered population of the country, and several meetings have been held in various localities, three organizations are to be commenced next week in this town under the
