This is entirely false, and it was done as many of secession proclivities and union men have informed me to obtain my removal from this Division, and I have had to guard the negro against using any retaliatory measures. 

Every white man here who has actually joined the Republican Clubs or Union League or who even sympathizes with the true legal efforts here to restore this State into the union in accordance to the laws of Congress, are hooted down, cut from all society they may have formerly moved in; they the secessionists will not patronize them in any manner, and they dig up every buried and forgotten thing which may bring scandal upon such men's heads.

Temperance is on the increase. I have been talking to the colored throughout my Division as far as I have been able to upon this subject and I can safely say it has not been without a beneficial result
