them witless, now I am at a loss to discover any good reason why these people should be kept in a constant state of agitation and when there is abundance of time in which they can inform themselves, as far as is necessary, which would not, in any way embarrass the Agricultural operations of this  Country - If these public demonstrations are brought about by men who would explain the principles, objects, and drives, of their political parties, perhaps we would have a better state of things, but the Effect is that every man, who has succeeded in getting a few pet phrases or ideas upon his mind, is seized with directed ambition and proposes to become a great man, at once, gets up these meetings, addresses the people either upon local issues, or questions long since settled, which only serve to excite bad feeling, and to widen the chasm between the races all of which is really at the expense of the Freedmen.

In the matter of faithfulness to the obligations of Contracts, I believe as a general thing the freedmen are becoming more disposed to carry out same, than the white men - I have but few Complaints, from the whites upon the subject, excepting what grew out  of the time lost in attendance on the public meetings named.

A number of Cases have been reported to me, wherein the Employers have seized upon the absence of the Employee at the meetings named, as a pretext for Discharging him without pay, claiming that the
