The feeling existing between the Citizens and the Freedmen is not of a cordial or friendly nature and though the latter class treat the former with a certain amount of respect, still a feeling of distrust is apparent in their conversation and dealings with each other. This is to a great extent owing to the swindling and extortion practiced upon the Freedmen during the past year by a class of dishonest and unprincipled employers. And the Freedmen are now wary and suspicious of any advances made to them on the part of the Whites.

They are becoming well informed upon their political rights and privileges, and exhibit a remarkable interest in any political information. And I have no doubt will succeed in electing their candidates to the coming state Convention. 

In Lunenberg County cases of beating and driving off the Freedmen is vastly on the increase. A certain class of ruffianly and swindling employers have tried
