and Henrico, as candidates to the approaching State Convention. The meeting was for both colors, but was mostly attended by the colored. It passed off very peaceably, and its action was unanimous in the choice of candidates.

The Temperance movement is thus far an utter failure. No one can be found in favor of taking a pledge to abstain from the use of "cider" as a beverage and but few who do not want the privilege of taking something stronger occasionally, - not for medicine. I have improved several occasions during the month to create a proper sentiment and shall continue to at every suitable opportunity.

A school has been begun at Hanover Court House which will, I think be quite prosperous. Other schools will I trust be commenced for the benefit of the freedmen in different parts of the county.
