of Logs, for School House & Churches combined. and only need a little encouragement to start three schools by the middle of November. As soon as these buildings are ready for use a Temperance movement may be organized by the few who do not drink & will without doubt do a great deal of good. Until that time I see no way to start a Temperance movement although it is needed here if any where - for whiskey is not only used to excess, but is a detestable article as its effect bears witness. Neglect to make contracts on the part of the Freedmen, & sometimes unwillingness to contract except verbaly on the part of the Whites, is a prolific cause of misunderstanding. & trouble. It has been my endeavor to urge upon both classes the necessity that they make contracts which cannot be misunderstood. The necessity for this is very great from the fact that many work for shares of the crop, necessarily making the contracts very complicated.
