application and frequently misunderstand the true doctrine of the law. The state of feeling between the races is as good as can be expected, there is and will be during this generation a strong prejudice on the part of some of the whites toward the freedmen, which time only can efface - still a large portion of the intellingent acknowledge and accept the situation as just and act accordingly. Education will receive an impetus in a few days as the Schools in this Sub-Dist will commence during the present week with indications of a full attendance many of the adult freedmen are anxious and willing to attend night school in order to secure for themselves the ability to read and write the advantages of which they are aware of. The Temperance movement is not gaining ground as rapidly as the friends of the cause would desire but the friends of the cause are still working for its success. There will be but little difficulty in regard to the political status of the freedmen, they are kept constantly posted by their friends and in this Sub-Dist. there are none who have reason to com-
