And the Freedmen are now wary and suspicious of any advances made to them on the part of the Whites. They are well informed upon their political rights and privileges, and exhibit a remarkable interest in any political information, And have succeeded in electing their two Republican candidates to the Convention from these counties. I anticipated that several Freedmen would be drove off or discharged, by reason of voting the Republican Ticket, but, I am agreeably disappointed in not hearing of any such eases, nor am I aware of any additional prejudice or bitter feeling being exhibited towards the Freedmens on the part of the Whites since the election,
In Lunenburg Co cases of beating and driving off the Freedmen is not so numerous, as last month, A certain class of ruffianly and Swindling employers have tried to commence their yearly amusement, and tricks of beating and driving off their Laborers after the Crop is almost made, last year there was no remedy, but now the prompt excercice of my authority as Magistrate, remedies the matter and compels such employers to pay their laborers money wages for the time they labored there
The Overseers of Poor of These Counties have taken charge of the pauper Colored, and they are no longer an expence to this Bureau,
Three Freedmens Schools are now in operation in these Counties and fairly attended,

Very respectfully your Obdt Svt.
