place, and although their reasons were aligned for so doing, the impression was made upon my mind that the employer did do so as much if not more, on account of political difference than anything else. None have been turned out of employment by the year so far as I have yet learned.

I fear that there will be more real want among the freedmen this coming winter than last from the fact that a greater number of them set up to work for themselves this year, and have failed in their crop so as not to be able to pay their rent and hire a team and have sufficient to carry them through the winter.

I cannot say that the cause of temperance has gained much during this past month, but a fact worth mentioning is that I have not seen a single freedmen under the influence of liquor within this division during the month.
