of helpless children or stil more helpless old persons - also the failure to receive full confirmation for labor there will be much suffering among the colored people the coming winter I am satisfied there will be a large demand for the common articles of clothing especially children & womens clothes

I consequence of the failure to obtain teachers from the north we have been unable to increase the number of our schools & only by a special effort have we been able to reopen the one at Wytheville This been a sad disappointment to several locatitins where schools had been asked for We are stil in hopes that by the efforts of the Freedmen & the generous aid of some friendly whites to be able to do something for some other neighborhoods

One great drawback upon the prosperity of the colored people here, as elsewhere is the laxity of moral sentiment upon the subject of marriage - the result of their former condition Almost constanty the complaint is made that one party or the
