cultivation, and this month in two instances they have called on me for the purpose of getting my intercession in their behalf for a fair distribution of the crops so raised, claiming, and not without some reason that their employers were denying them their just allotment. In these cases I succeeded in effecting an apportionment satisfactory to the parties concerned. I find an inclination on the part of the whites, though not universal, to override and take advantage of the freedmen whether they are working for a share of the crops or for wages.

The cause of Temperance among the freedmen in this county is in a satisfactory condition, not a case of drunkenness having come to my knowledge during the month. These are no temperance organizations among the colored people in the county, and from inquiry and observation, I am led to believe that the necessity for them does not at present exist, and I furthermore believe that exertions in that direction would only prove futile.

I am General
Very Respectfully
