down like dogs & the courts would be closed against them as a means of protection either of their persons or their property. The old doctrine that "a colored person has no rights which a white man is bound to respect" is as rife in this part of Virginia to day as it was in the palmiest days of slavery. Tis true the principle, withe many others of a like character, has been latent for some time passed but the result of the recent election in some of the Northern states has developed it in all its native ugliness.
The Freedmen are as a general thing doing what they can to provide for themselves & are usually industrious & temperate.
The cause of education, owing to the failure of Northern societies to supply the teachers to meet the demand, is not making much progress in this District. The School in this place under the charge of Mrs Austin is in a flourishing condition. This the only school in this Division of the 8 Sub Dist.
