total abstenance society, with weekly meetings to debate questions of interest to the society and to the freedmen generally, is in a flourishing condition, and during the winter months it will not only add to its ranks, but it is hoped, will do much good - The indigent are cared for by the County authorities as are other paupers, and altho' suffering must exist among a certain of the people, still the condition is constantly improving of the larger class of the colored race - 

An awakening sence of the importance of education is also manifest, and a movement for the erection of a schoolhouse, with capacity to accomodate all the colored children, in this city is rapidly maturing, and the land has already been secured for that purpose — The schools now in existence are in as good condition, as can reasonably be expected, and now having succeeded in procuring the services of a lady of experience, a higher degree of proficiency, will undoubtedly be attained - 

In all matters at law between the whites and colored, justice is generally administered
