   The present year closes with a material improvement apparent in the condition of the freedpeople, notwithstanding they have had a bad season to contend against.
   In several instances they have purchased small tracts of land generally paying cash for the same.
   Small Lumber Mills have been started in the county by Northern capitalists which furnish employment to a great number of hands, also bringing the price of labor into competition, the mills generally pay good prices for labor.
