the amount of yield [[strikethrough]] can be arrived at [[/strikethrough]] ascertained, which in the main is small & in some cases almost a failure. The tobacco crop was only an average yield, cotton almost a failure, & taking into account its extreme low price may be safely considered quite a failure. Corn not half a crop as the low ground fields were destroyed by the continued heavy rains in the spring & early summer. Wheat only average & but little raised.

Hence the Freedmen who were working for an interest in the crops will realize but little and no more than enough to make "ends meet" and like those who were working for wages, they will begin the next year after settling up all accounts but little better off than they were twelve months or two years ago.
