threatening the lives of one another and of the citizens of the town, but being more especially [[strikethrough]] vindictive [[/strikethrough]] malicious towards the colored people - a Freedman having been shot on Christmas night and another shot on the night of the 27- the latter perhaps fatally. All that is known of these two cases of shooting is that the perpetrators were young white men who are generally believed to have been students- and thus far, there has been no means of identifying the guilty parties.
 
Colored persons, both male and female, have been insulted on the streets in day light, and been stoned, cursed, and had pistols cocked at them after nightfall, until the evil, from its frequency, has become unbearable and produced intense exasperation among the Freedmen.  

The most unoffending colored [[strikethrough]] people [[/strikethrough]] persons have been treated as above stated.

These lawless youths have openly defied the civil authorities of the town, who really seem afraid to act with decision and firmness in punishing their misdeeds, though they unite with the rest of the citizens in denouncing the outrages. 

Against the citizens of the town I have no complaint to make, with the exception of a very few
