I have the honor to make the following report of Bureau affairs in general in this Division which is comprised of the following named countries namely, Washington. Russell. Buchan. Scott. Wise. and Lee. for the month of January 1868 the colored people are doing very well and would do better but for the stance they took in the late election which has put the whites down on them and the farmers to get rid of them talk of putting their farms in grass which if they do will throw a great many out of employment but I think it is merely a threat for they cant do without the labor of the colored man
In some instances the colored men are treated very badly here is a case in print some two or three weeks ago a colored man was walking along the road attending to his business when he was met by three men one of them shouted there comes a radical lets go for him. where upon one of them pulled out a pistol and beat him over the head with the but of it hurting him badly the Sheriff was notified when after some delay proceeded to arrest them but they had fled into Tennessee.
