the referees & myself are left alone, and we make up the award & notify the parties of the same. 

As these unsettled claims are usually small in amount, and are greatly needed by the laborers for present use the above mode presents a speedy & cheap adjustment, & at the same time secures substantial justice to both parties. In the [[strikethrough]] case [[/strikethrough]] matter of the colored man Jones, whose case was referred to me by a note from your office a few days ago, as there was quite a large real estate interest involved, under the will of one Mimms, & as Mr. Guy, an able lawyer had charge of the Executer's claims against the [[strikethrough]] heirs [[/strikethrough]] legatees under the will, I advised him to employ counsel to meet the case when it shall come up in court; & he accordingly retained Mr. Leake, who agreed for a moderate fee to defend the suit before the Circuit Court in April next. I shall watch it carefully & if justice is not done, will report the facts. 

I attended the County Court in Fluvanna Co. [[strikethrough]] last [[/strikethrough]] the first of this week. The only matter in court requiring attention, was the case of a young colored girl indicted by the Grand Jury for the murder of an infant child.
