them before some Justice of the Peace or other person to read to them and witness the contracts. [[strikethrough]] between them. (the 1st & 2d. parties therein). [[/strikethrough]]  I find in many instances that the contracts thus satified are made very binding upon the Freedmen, beyond what any justice or safety demands.  There are some of the Freedmen, however, and in fact a good many that I find are becoming quite capable of looking out for themselves and do not allow or suffer themselves to be cheated or imposed upon in making contracts.

The masses of this people, however, have yet got a great deal to learn to be able to contend with, unaided, intelligent and designing people who are hostile to their interests and careless as to their future welfare.
