freedmen out of employment than any time since I came to the county.

Since my last report the School at News Ferry has been reopened under the auspices of the African Civilization Society of Brooklyn N.Y. and the True friends of Charity a society of the freedmen at News-Ferry. I had hoped to have made a full report in regard to this school but I have been confined to my room with a sore throat and have not been able to visit that part of the county to ascertain facts connected with it. There are at this time three schools for freedmen in the county. The school at this place is in a very flourishing condition it is gratifying to see the progress that the more advanced scholars are making in their studies. There is great need of a building for school & church purposes here The room now used for a school-room is a basement the entrance to which in muddy weather is through mud over shoe top and at the foot of the steps water often stands several inches deep. The room itself is very damp and is doing great injury to the health of both teachers and scholars. There is a movement on foot to ascertain how much can be relied upon towards building a
