are having a good success and the interest in them among the Freedmen is much increasing. 

It is expected that in a few months more some of the schools will be able to send out teachers under the supervision of the Bureau to places where small schools are needed. Besides the Schools above referred to there are three supported wholy by Freedmen and taught by Colored teachers. One at Salem Roanoke Co. one about 15 Miles east of Wytheville in Wythe County and one in Tompson Valley Tazwell Co. Va In these schools there are about 127 Schollars learning to read. They are destitute of suitable Books and efforts are being made to supply them which we hope will be at least partially successful. The sentiments of the Whites are decidedly against these schools and this opposition is increased on learning that a Bureau Officer encourages and sustaines them. 

The Counties all make provision for the support of the poor and whenever a case of destitution is found the overseer of the poor for the Dist. is notified and requested to make the necessary provision. The law also
