for which they are arrested by the local authorities; some on being examined are discharged on account of their age while others mere boys are convicted and sent to keep company with prisoners steeped in crime. This matter is one which should meet the attention of all friends of the colored people. In my opinion something ought to be done by way of establishing a home for these children where they could receive religious, moral, and educational advantages. The colored churches would no doubt contribute freely to foster and maintain an institution of this kind. The colored orphanage under the guidance of Mrs. Gibbons and located near the city is doing a good work, but it is impossible for this Lady with the limited facilities at her disposal both as to funds and room to meet the exigencies of the case; an enterprise of this sort would prove a blessing to these helpless and unguarded
