starting schools, and how many children can be found to attend. I am satisfied that proper steps would soon put this sub district in a "prosperous" condition. The "State of feeling" in a general sense is harmonious; but their old notions and prejudices often lead the whites to see but one side to the question, and that points directly to their interests.

Permit me to add that I have seen no white man, notwithstanding his professions of charity and right, willing to assist in the work of elevating this poor despised race. I am sorry to find many "tipplers", and much drunkenness among the freedmen; I have endeavored to show them how wanton, and cruel they are to their wifes and little ones, by throwing away their scanty earnings at the Rum establishments, instead of saving every cent for present and future wants.
 
I do not despair: I trust to see the seed now being planted, spring up, and bear much fruit.
