the Zau expires Cases of litigation among freedmen all of race occurrence, and rather than engage in it with whites, they submit to many annoyances. A better feeling than formerly is however observed, and a more gradual disposition on the part of local authorities to take cognizance of cases brought to their notice by freedmen is manifest. The would be assassins of the freedman Barbour at Newtown, reported last month, are still at large, and it is not known that the Civil Authorities are using any further efforts to arrest then than the issuing of a warrant. It is said however that the culprits are worsening to compromise the matter with the freedman.
The timely distribution of clothing at this very inclement season to the aged and helpless poor has been of great benefit, and has added largely to the schools, which are the greatest hope for the future. Crime among the freedmen appears to be disappearing. An increased interest in the cause of education is everywhere exhibited, and even the temperance cause is not hopeless altho but very few accessions are added to the numbers of the society here.
