to employer & employee. The few who are disposed to be dishonest should not be allowed to damage the interests of the whole community, but be in some way promptly dealt with. The civil authorities of the County are supporting the Indigent Freed People to a limited extent & will by the 5th of March have ample accomodation for all who need help at the Poor Institution. The steward is apparently kind hearted, & I believe there will hereafter be no discrimination in favor of the white. Two Freedmen are temporarily support outside of the Institution, & a few are admitted. The Freedmen do not like to accept of help in the Poor House which seems a good sign. None by the old & crippled will go to the Institution. Now that the spring is opening, I hope to succeed in some measure in the school work. Churches school Houses & Missionary & Temperance effort, are all needed here. It is appaling to witness the needless waste of the hard earning of the Freedmen in the stores, all of which are whiskey shops. One school House at West Point Church is slowly but surely going up. It will also be a church. A Sunday School is already in successful operation there. The Freedmen as a rule will do but little toward schools untill, they have seen them & the good they do.
