I visited Pungoteague the next day and found on investigation that John J Jains had shot Jim Holden, while in the kitchen of said Jims and that the colord people had colected together Some of them armed which caused the white citizens and Jains to fear that the life of said Jains was in danger.
Said Jains had been secreted before my arrival at Pungoteague but when I demanded his whereabouts the information was given to me and I caused the said Jains to be arrested and brought before Louis L Snead a Justice of the Peace who bound him over to appear at the March term of the Court with [[?]] in the sum of $500.
Complaints having been made before Louis L. Snead and Edmund R Bagwell Justice of the Peace for Accomac County for breach of the Peace against the colord citizens who took part in this affair. Warrants were issued for them to appear before said Justice of the Peace on Saturday the 29th day of February 1868 for examination.
