poor of that city with soup daily, and in no instance has any difference been made in the treatment of them on account of race or color. The appropriation for the support of the soup house being exhausted, that institution ceased on the 29th ult.
The prospect of employment for the freed people is fair, the work in the rural districts will of course go on, to a certain extent, but under the present uncertain state of affairs no one seems disposed to enter into business, manufactures, or even agriculture largely, Should civil affairs progress favorably, some improvement must necessarily be made in which case labor will be in demand and there will be no cause for destitution, except among some aged and infirm people and widows with families of children, who will have to be provided for by the civil authorities or the government.
