dependence upon their old master and the whites generally. They are progressing in reading, writing and industry, and allow me to say very little crime is committed by them. We must look and with astonishment to these people who have so suddenly been released from bondage, with the most abject miserable ignorance still bearing down upon them, that they perpetuate so little crime, when the class that has formerly held them in bondage and caused their mnids to be of the same color as their skins, are continually harrowing them with taunts, threats and proscription.   

Temperance is a matter of after consideration. They would not now listen to it as their minds are wholly bent upon what is to be their future political status. However very little intemperance prevails throughout the rural districts.
