Few of the Freedpeople make more than their food & clothing - Many are in debt & will therefore be behind this year also - they are improvident & will seem in debt - to as great an extent as their employer will admit & seem to desire to know nothing of how much they are until the hour of settlement.

The poor whites deceive them a great deal & stir up a feeling against the able employers - induce them to work for them - to exchange substantives for apple brandy - this, however does not occur to any great extent - & fortunately - for it cannot be tracked.

No cases of violence against the Freedpeople have occurred during the month - or at least have been reported to me - or come under my notice.
