present month, a party of about six, connected with this organization, went to the house of a colored man in Fauquier County, at about 12 o'clock at night, and demanded that he should get up and open his doors which he did.  they then ordered him to come out, which he did, they then set upon him and beat him with the butt ends of pistols and sabres, and left the premises, they then broke into the colored school house at Warrenton and committed outrages there.  This organization extends all over this Sub-District, but, I have heard, as yet, of no other outrages within its limits.  although a repetition of them may be expected at any time.

In cases of trial by the civil authorities the cause of justice is advanced by the appeal allowed to the military authorities, so that few cases of even attempted injustice occur.  there are many complaints made to me, but many are so made by the colored people through a mistaken idea and a total ignorance of the law governing the case.

Labor is in demand and no difficulty is encountered in obtaining situations for all those able to work.  there are however many aged, infirm, and sick with large families
